HistoryChildren are taught history by looking closely at a period and relating it to what they already know. They use artefacts, facsimiles, information technology, educational visits, questionnaires and interviews to undertake research. We encourage the children to ask questions and find answers about the social, political, economic, religious, scientific and cultural aspects of each period of time studied. GeographyGeography helps children to make sense of their surroundings and the wider world. Our aim is to develop children’s knowledge and understanding through geographical questions, map work and fieldwork.ArtChildren will have the opportunity to develop their skills in many media by using pencils, paints, inks, pastels etc. We encourage them to look closely and work from real life as far as possible.Art is an important aspect of topic work but equally, children will be shown the importance of pattern and design and to appreciate the work of artists and the qualities of great paintings and sculptures. Design Technology (DT)Children will develop their design and technology capability through working with a range of materials, textiles and food. They will be encouraged to design and evaluate their ideas and products and also learn to use a variety of tools and equipment safely and with some skill. Thus pupils will begin to develop an enquiring mind and become involved in investigative activities. They will express themselves using the appropriate vocabulary.Physical Education (PE)Through PE, we aim to give each child the opportunity to learn and develop physical and social skills and to gain enjoyment, confidence and self-esteem. The National Curriculum covers gymnastics, dance, games, athletics, swimming, outdoor and adventurous activities. In the Infants we cover gymnastics, dance, games and this is extended in the Juniors with the addition of athletics, swimming, outdoor and adventurous activities. Under the school auspices we also offer our Juniors extra-curricular activities of football, netball and athletics and welcome any support for these from parents. Our aim is for each child to participate happily in a variety of sports and physical activities and to achieve the highest standards possible. Football and netball matches are played against neighbouring schools. Gymnastics and athletics awards are achieved, set against national criteria. Years Y5/6 take part in an annual football and netball inter-house competition. We provide opportunities to develop the skills necessary to be successful both on an individual basis and in team competition, whilst learning how to participate in a sporting manner. Music and The Performing ArtsMusic is a very important part of the life of the school. We have a school choir and orchestra and put on several concerts during the year. We have visiting licensed music teachers who teach recorder, and violin from year 2 onwards and piano, guitar, flute, clarinet brass and percussion from year 3 onwards. Bromley Youth Music Trust has flutes, clarinets, violins, trumpets, trombone, euphonium and guitars that are available for loan for the first year. There is a tradition of outstanding achievement in the Performing Arts at The Highway, which we are extremely proud of. We see marked benefits to pupils’ creativity, self-esteem and enjoyment as well as general academic achievement. All children make use of the stage and stage lighting to perform their plays to parents and the wider community. |
